Action Analytics drive the user to a specific action. Too often, education analytics only drive more questions. Data Solutions for Education, LLC has worked with educators to identify the data that will actually move a specific user, be it a classroom teacher, a principal, a dropout prevention coordinator, etc., to action.

In order for analytics to be actionable, they must:

  • Be tailored to each user
  • Focus on student-level data
  • Point to a cause, not a result
  • Be easy to access with intuitive functionality
  • Be supported with professional development

Impacting Learning

The point of education analytics is to impact learning. Analytics which do not drive action are not able to impact learning.

Ineffective Analytics
Many education data systems present users with analytics such as the following:

My High School Graduation Rate: 82.1%
Average State Graduation Rate: 78.5%

While the above metrics inform the user that the graduation for their high school is above the state average, aggregate metrics such as these don't give the user a sense of what, if any action should be taken. Instead of driving action, the above metrics drive more questions such as:

  • Were there common characteristics in the students which did drop out which could have been addressed?
  • Are my current students likely to graduate/dropout at the same rate?
  • What interventions will be most effective for my current students?
  • Which current students are most at risk for dropping out and why?

Effective Analytics
Effective analytics drive action. They focus more on the students of today and tomorrow than prior students. This is a major shift from data systems which focus on accountability. Instead of focusing on accountability, Education Data Solutions, LLC specializes in systems which assist educators in performing more effectively to impact learning of current students.
